The Institute of Industrial Research (IIR) is one of the leading 13 Research Institutes of Ghana’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the main Science and Technology Research and Development Institution of Ghana. The CSIR-IIR is Ghana’s foremost industrial research and development organization.

CSIR-IIR Laboratory Facilities

Biomass Laboratory

Biogas Research

  • The biogas research equipment set is made up of circulating water bath with temperature control facility, 5 liter Continuous stir tank reactor (CSTR) which is the bioreactor, Ultra flow meter which can measure the flow rate of the gas as well as the cumulative gas volume which is connected to a data acquisition centre and connected to the computer to give you real time measurement of gas volume with graphical presentation.
  • The facility is used to study biogas production.  It is use to carry out co-digestion study to improve biogas production. It has the capability to enable research on biogas production optimization by varying critical parameters like temperature, feedstock ratio retention time.
  • Apart from biogas research the bioreactor is also used for waste treatment research.

Biofuel Research

  • The Laboratory has a state of the art bomb calorimeter which is used to study calorific and heating value of biofuels (charcoals and other materials).

Bioprocessing of Agricultural Residues for Value Addition

  • Bioethanol research
  • Amino acid fermentation (lactic acid and lysine)
  • Solid state fermentation for protein
