CSIR-IIR hosts COMSATS national training workshop

Institute of Industrial Research (CSIR) Hosted Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) National Training Workshop on:
Repair and Maintenance of Scientific & Engineering Equipment in Universities, Research Institutions and Small Scale Industries

Date: August 26-30, 2013.
Venue: CSIR- IIR, East Legon-Accra, Ghana.

Scientific Research and Development activities are the most effective and sustainable tools in achieving long term national economic growth of developing countries. The pace of research largely depends on the skills of the scientists and technicians, and the availability of the well maintained scientific instruments. In developing countries, lack of planning, inappropriate equipment inventories and severe shortage of repair and maintenance facilities pose considerable obstacle for the smooth progress of research programmes.

There is a great need to develop an indigenous capacity to repair and maintain scientific equipment to achieve technological self-reliance thereby reducing dependence on foreign experts. In view of this, a national training Workshop was organized by the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS), in collaboration with its Centre of Excellence in Ghana, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The national workshop entitled “Repair and Maintenance of Scientific  and Engineering Equipment in Universities, Research Institutions and Small Scale Industries” took place in Institute of Industrial Research of CSIR, Accra-Ghana, from 26th-30thAugust 2013.

The Workshop highlighted the issues/problems relating to maintenance of scientific engineering equipment used in universities, research institutions and small scale industries. Three experts from Pakistan and other IIR-CSIR experts provided hands-on training to the participants of the workshop to upgrade their skills and enhance their capacities in repairing, maintaining and troubleshooting of important scientific engineering equipment in their organizations.
